Details of Today's Reading: A census is taken of Israel, the division of the land according to the number in each tribe, the law of inheritances, Moses reminded that he can not go into the promise land, and Joshua is appointed as Moses' successor.

The word inheritance is defined as a possession gained through someone's death, a gift, something obtained or received. Through Christ's death an inheritance is given to all who put their trust and faith in Him. The second you call on Jesus Christ to save you Jesus begins preparing the place that you were inherited in the Kingdom of God. Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” - John 14:1-3.

A second census was taken of the Israelites, 602,730 men twenty years old and above were counted, not including the Levites, out of the 602,730 only two men were from the first generation of Israelites that came out of Egypt. Each tribe was given an inheritance according to the number of people in each tribe.

“And it came to pass after the plague, that the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying, Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, throughout their fathers' house, all that are able to go to war in Israel. And Moses and Eleazar the priest spake with them in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying, Take the sum of the people, from twenty years old and upward; as the LORD commanded Moses and the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt...These were the numbered of the children of Israel, six hundred thousand and a thousand seven hundred and thirty. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Unto these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names. To many thou shalt give the more inheritance, and to few thou shalt give the less inheritance: to every one shall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbered of him.” - Numbers 26:1-4,51-54.

This land was given freely to the Israelites, they did not have to work for it, they did not have to be on their best behavior, they simply received it because they were God's children. Our works can not get God to give us a part of the inheritance, it is only by being His child that we will receive anything from Him. The only way to become a child of God is through our acceptance of Jesus Christ. However, the amount of the inheritance we receive will be according to the work we do after we accept Christ. “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” - Colossians 3:23,24.

Anyone can receive a part of God's Inheritance, there was a family of Israelites that had no sons, only daughters, when they went before Moses and asked if they had a right to their fathers land God gave a new command.

“And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying, Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons. Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father. And Moses brought their cause before the LORD. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them. And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.” - Numbers 27:2-8.

All who call upon the Lord Jesus Christ will receive part of God's inheritance. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved...For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” - Romans 9,12,13.

After God gave the command to divide up the land He told him to go to mount Abarim, from that mountain Moses could see the promised land, miles and miles of beauty beheld him. It was there that God reminded Moses that he would not be able to step foot onto the land because of his rebellion.

“And the LORD said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel. And when thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered. For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before their eyes: that is the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin. And Moses spake unto the LORD, saying, Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation, Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd.” - Numbers 27:12-17.

This sight of Canaan signified his believing prospect of the better country, that is, the Kingdom of God. While Moses was stricken from entering the promised land on earth he was not stricken from entering God's Kingdom. This is an illustration of the forgiveness of God, no matter what we have done in the past, we are forgiven and allowed to enter the Kingdom of God through our faith in Jesus Christ, who is our shepherd. “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” - I Corinthians 6:9-11. Praise God!

When Jesus was on the cross there were two men next to Him being crucified as well. “And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” - Luke 23:39-43. Instantly that man was saved and allowed to enter the Kingdom of God, it was nothing he did to get saved, except for believing in Christ. If you have not called on Christ as your Savior you will not be able to enter the Kingdom of God, you will be able to see it, but not enter.

Through Christ you have received a part of the inheritance of the Kingdom of God, one day you will not just be allowed to look over the beautiful land that you could never enter, but will be able to walk right through those pearly gates into a land so spectacular that it does not compare to the most beautiful place here on earth. “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” - Revelation 21:3,4. Praise God!

Jesus Christ Revealed: Today Jesus is revealed through Moses as he humbly handed over the leadership of the people over to Joshua. “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” - James 4:10.
