A Sin Unto Death

Chapters: Jeremiah 1-3
Message Title: A Sin Unto Death

Hello My Friend,

The Book of Jeremiah is the twenty-fourth book of the Old Testament/Bible and contains fifty-two chapters. The timeline for these events took place approximately between 629BC – 588BC. The author of the book is Jeremiah and it was written to warn Judah of the captivity of the Jews, and to encourage them to repent. What we are to learn from the book is that national disasters and deterioration of the world is often due to disobedience to God, but as we return to HIm things will be restored. This book is actually directed to backsliders. “And it shall come to pass, after that I have plucked them out I will return, and have compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land.” - Jeremiah 12:5.

Every time I read the Books of Isaiah and Jeremiah I am reminded of the state that my own nation is in, one that is headed for the same fate as Israel and Judah were when God judged them. Before God places judgment on any nation or person He gives ample warning of repentance so that He can remove the judgment. Now, about seventy years after Isaiah prophesied about the judgment, Jeremiah is about to be right in the midst of it. God calls him to tell the nation of the judgment that is about to come, giving him assurance that he will be safe. Remember, these are not strangers to God, they are the ones who seventy years ago knew this was coming.

Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD. Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant. Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land. For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah. And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.” - Jeremiah 1:8-10,14-16.

Before we were formed in the womb, God had a purpose for us, sadly, not everyone fulfills that purpose, some reject it out of fear, others because they love the world. Those who receive Jesus Christ as their Saviour accept His purpose to know His Son. Those who are saved are touched by the hand of God, and He through the Holy Spirit puts His words in their mouths. God will deliver His people out of the judgment that is to come, we who are saved are God's mouth and we are to preach the Gospel to all that we see. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” - Matthew 28:19,20.

Those who are saved and living their lives with Christ, know they have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them, because of this, God expects a little more from them. Can I tell you that there are some unsaved people that do more for God than saved, the sad thing is they have no idea that they need to be saved by Christ for it to mean anything. Through Jeremiah, God upbraids both Judah and Israel for their unprofitable works and false gods.

Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah. Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD. In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion. O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?” - Jeremiah 2:11,28-30.

Any religion that changes the simplicity of the Gospel and added all these rules to salvation is creating a false god, you can work and plead with God all you want under a false religion, but He will not hear you, they are unprofitable works and prayers. Until we admit we are sinners and cannot be saved by our own works, believe that Jesus died, was buried, and arose three days to save us, and confess that we need Him, God will see us worshiping a false god and ignore us. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.” - Romans 10:9-12.

Israel had already faced their judgment when they were attacked by the Assyrians, now, Judah, who were the Christians of that day, were about to face judgment, the sad thing, their sins were more abominable than Israel's. God illustrates their backsliding as an adulterous woman, He gives them one more plea to repent. “The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot. And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion: And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.” - Jeremiah 3:6-8,14,15.

Many saved people continue to live wicked, sinful lives, fully believing that their actions are justified through their salvation. While that behavior does not remove a persons salvation it does bring judgment, there really are sins out there that can kill us, and those who remain in them will will die in them if they do not repent of them. “If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.” - 1 John 5:16-18.

Today's Prayer: God, It is amazing how much You reveal to us through the Holy Spirit, I know sometimes I get over confident and think that I can do this on my own, but You reveal to me time and time again that my way leads to a big mess, but Yours always leads to victory. Thank You for giving me those second chances to get back up and move forward, let me not be held captive to sin, only let me depend on You as I walk with You, my Saviour. In Jesus' name. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
