Message Title: Staying Sober (Awake)

Hello My Friend,

While every generation has had their share of signs that Christ is coming soon, this generation has had more than any. Those who know Him have no problem understanding that many of the wars, crazy events, and natural disasters of today are signs of His return. Of course, there is always someone predicting the day He will return and will get some people all stirred up, but I think that that is a way that God gets people to sober up and realize that He truly is coming one day. We who know Christ are not off the hook either, we need to keep watching and remain sober, because He will be here when we least expect it. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” - 2 Peter 3:9,10.

As Jesus was standing in front of the synagogue, He watched people casting money and highly valuable gifts into the offering plate, then something caught His attention. A little old lady, poor as can be, took all she had, which added up to about a penny, and cast it into the offering plate. “And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had. And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.” - Luke 21:1-8.

And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones” The little bit of money that this saved woman gave meant more to Jesus than what all that the rich unsaved men gave. People who are rich are not really depending on God to do anything for them, but perhaps have the idea that what they do in the church will save them. Good deeds and wealth does not save you, only believing in and personally asking Christ to save you saves you. He is coming and when He does all hell is literally going to break loose, no amount of money or possessions will save you when the destruction comes, but Christ will, if you have received Him. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” - Romans 10:9,10.

Throughout their journey, Jesus often spoke to the disciples of His coming death, burial, and resurrection. The question of when He will return came up, Jesus gave a parable to explain. “And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees; When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” - Luke 21:29-36.

And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged” Sober, Regular; calm; not under the influence of passion or intoxication. We are to observe the signs of the times, which will be wars and famines, earthquakes and unusual storms in strange places. Jesus spoke this parable in the spring, just before the Passover, when all the trees were budding on the mount of Olives. As Christian's, we are to remain sober, always watching for the signs of His return so we are prepared. If we are not prepared we are going to be like the millions of other people caught off guard and not be ready when something really bad happens. “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.” - Revelation 16:15.

As they ate their last meal before Jesus would be betrayed and captured, He reveals that He knows one of them will betray Him. “And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” - Luke 22:23-30.
He that is chief, as he that doth serve” We may all have different titles, but we are all the same, sinners. The most powerful man or woman on earth can never save themselves. Those who humble themselves before Christ are stronger than any power man can obtain on earth. It is the humble ones, regardless of their power that get God's attention and blessings.“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” - 1 Peter 5:6-8.

Today's Prayer: God, While I do not know the hour in which Your Son will return, I do know that He is coming and I want to be prepared. Lord, lead me not into temptations or worldly pursuits that take my eyes off of You. Help me to be a watchful and sober at all times and to be a witness to others so they too can know that You will save them too if they only believe. I love You Lord, and pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
