Message: Deuteronomy: What The Law Could Not Do

Hello My Friend,

Grace, the wonderful unmerited favor of God, it is the only reason why He does not wipe everyone off the face of the earth and why He fulfills every promise He makes to His people. When God gave the law it was never meant to be a permanent solution for His people. What the law could not do, Jesus did do on the cross, so while we are no longer kept under the law we must not forget that it was meant to bring all to Christ, being justified by faith. “Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” - Galatians 3:21-24.

As Christians it can be easy to forget that not too long ago people were still offering animals to God as a way for them to be redeemed or cleansed from their sins. To truly have a great relationship with God we really do need to remove the sin from our lives, after all, it is what separates us from Him even when we are saved. We are not forced into a relationship with God, we must come to Him willingly, but if we do, He expects some things from us, not to keep us saved, but that we might live the best life we can possibly have with Him on earth. Moses explains to the Israelites what God requires from them to be blessed by Him.

And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good? Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD'S thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is. Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day. Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked. For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward: He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.” - Deuteronomy 10:12-18.

which regardeth not persons,” God does not and will not treat anyone different than another. Yes, some people do receive the favor of God through their obedience to Him, but He does not play favorites. What the law could not do, save eternally, Christ did do. We are saved by grace through Christ when we willingly receive Him as our Saviour, and then our works count. “Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: For there is no respect of persons with God. For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;” - Romans 2:9-12.

Let me tell you, the more you allow Christ to live in and through you you will certainly circumcise or remove the thick skin around your heart as the Holy Spirit reveals things that you ought not to be doing. God has much to show and give us when our hearts are right with Him, but curses also come if sin remains. Moses reveals the blessings and curses that come from being one of God's people.

Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be. There shall no man be able to stand before you: for the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as he hath said unto you. Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day: And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known. For ye shall pass over Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God giveth you, and ye shall possess it, and dwell therein. And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day.” - Deuteronomy 11:24-32.

I set before you this day a blessing and a curse;” Disobeying God always comes with a curse, death. Saved or not, sin slowly becomes the death of us. What the law could not do, remove the curse of death, Christ did do. All who believe and receive Him are no longer cursed with death, but life. Let's be honest, no matter how much we try, we will never be completely sin free, as long as we carry this flesh around us we are going to do things that displease God, but thanks to Jesus we are free and that curse is removed. “But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:” - Galatians 3:11-13.

Most people, regardless of their faith, try to do good in hopes of a better life, but the truth is, we all try to do what is right in our own eyes which is why it is important that we have Christ in our lives on a daily basis. He not only keeps our heart, mind, and soul looking to Him at all times, He keeps us in the will of God. The Israelites were about to embark on a new land that they knew nothing about, the guidance Moses was giving them was to make them ready to enter the promised land, but the rules were about to change. From food to God's house, Moses encourages them to follow the law, but warns them not to even ask about their gods.

Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the LORD thy God. When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land; Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods. What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.” - Deuteronomy 12:28-32.

How did these nations serve their gods?” This is how people get caught up in cults and false religion, they have discontent in their lives, do not follow God's word, and seek other ways to fill that void. If we are saved, Christ needs to be prominent in our lives, we may not always understand His ways, but that is where the Holy Spirit comes in, He is our guide to His ways. What the law could not do, give the Holy Spirit a permanent place in our souls, Christ did do. Once we receive Christ as our Saviour we are empowered with the Holy Spirit, that means God is always with us, but we need to stick to His plan, not add to it or remove anything from it. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.” - Proverbs 3:5-7.

Today's Prayer: God, I will never understand the qualifications to being one of Yours is simply believing in Your Son, nevertheless, I am and that is truly a blessing in itself. Lord, I know Jesus paid the price for me and that no work I do for You is needed for my salvation, but I want to have a great relationship with You. Lord, lead me and guide me, show me the way You want me to take, let me look not to the left or right, but straight ahead to You. Keep me in Your Word to know Your truths and teach me to lean on Your understanding and not mine, help me to discern truth from lies and warn others too. Increase my faith and trust in You so I can find joy through all of my trials, and let me not forget that what the law did not do, Your Son did for me. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
