Message: Judges: God Shall Rule

Hello My Friend,

All throughout our lives we have someone in authority over us, whether it is our parents growing up, a teacher, a boss, or a president. Even those in authority have someone to answer to, oh, we might think we do not answer to anyone, but everyone answers to someone. However, no matter who is in authority, it is God who has the final authority, and to the saved, born again Christian, everything we do falls back on God. “But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” - Hebrews 13:16,17.

Once again, Israel does evil in the sight of God, and He removes Himself from their presence, this time giving them into the hands of the Midianites. They cried to God and He chose a man named Gideon to be the miracle they needed to deliver them out of their affliction. Like many, Gideon heard the amazing stories of what God had done for his people, but He seemed no where to be around, until now.

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites. And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee? And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house. And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.” - Judges 6:12-16.

why then is all this befallen us?” Quite often, it is not the things we are doing that causes affliction in our lives, but ungodly people dwelling among us. There was a reason why Jesus, while hanging on the cross said, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”, people are living their lives by their own standards. While some go to the extreme and do some truly wicked things, which causes God's wrath to begin with, most think that the lives they are living are good enough to keep them out of hell. Sadly, it does not work that way, it never has, atonement from sin was always necessary, shed blood is always necessary for atonement. Jesus gave us a permanent solution to temporary atonement. “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” - Hebrews 9:12-14.

After God did some miraculous things to prove to Gideon that He was around, and that He was going to use him to lead an army, Gideon believe Him. God assured Gideon that He was with him and would lead the Israelites to victory over the Midianites, Out of thirty thousand soldiers only three hundred were chosen to go to battle.

And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place. So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley. And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand. But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host: And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers. And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do. When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.” - Judges 7:7-10,16-18.

go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:” Not much is known about Phurah, but he was a godly man, one who could help encourage Gideon if he was afraid to complete the task God called him to do. We all need someone we can turn to when we are afraid, someone who is godly and can help us do the work God calls us to do. Sometimes, we have to be the godly person that another needs to give encouragement to. In either case, we all have Jesus, who is our strength and gives us the courage to do anything God calls us to do, even be a friend. “We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” - Romans 15:1-4.

With just three hundred men the Israelites won the battle, it was an interesting sight to see, three hundred men blowing trumpets, breaking glass, and shouting out to God. The men were so spooked that they began killing each other, and not one Israelite soldier lost their lives. After their victory, the people wanted Gideon to rule over them. Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian. And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you. And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house. Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.” - Judges 8:22,23,27,28.

the LORD shall rule over you.” Gideon declined to rule over them, reminding them that God was their ruler. No good man can be pleased with any honor done to himself, which belongs only to God. Gideon was wrong to have the ephod made, first, this was something only for the priests, and second, it was turned into an idol as people sought after it. Many are led into false ways by one false step of a godly leader, which is why we need to make sure that we not only teach the truths of the word of God, but live by them as well. “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.” - Hebrews 13:8,9.

Jesus Christ Revealed: Today, Jesus is revealed as the Angel of the LORD and the Sword of The LORD, which is His word. “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:” - Ephesians 6:17. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” - John 1:14.

Today's Prayer: God, Time and time again You have proved Yourself mighty in my life, yet time and time again I have failed in acknowledging You. I am sorry that I do not thank You enough for all the miracles You have made in my life, even the ones where I was the miracle someone needed. Thank You for the trials that show me that You are still around. Sometimes, I feel like I will never get out of the circumstances I am in, but I know that I will because Your mercy endures. As You establish me, strengthen me, and settle me in the love of Christ, I know that all things will work together for good and You will truly get the glory. In Jesus' name. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
