Genesis: Peculiar People

KJB Daily Devotion – Following Jesus Through Every Chapter
Date: Tuesday, January 12, 2016
Chapters: Genesis 34-36
Message: Genesis: Peculiar People

Hello My Friend,

Peculiar, To be singular; odd, extraordinary; differing from what is usual. Being one of God's people makes us extraordinary, different from the world, it separates us from those who have no regard for life except to satisfy the lusts of their flesh. If you have received Christ as your Saviour than you are peculiar, that means that you are extraordinary. “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.” -1 Peter 2:9,10.

Being peculiar means that you stand out from those who the world considers as normal. I have to tell you that if the world sees these corrupt lifestyles as normal than we are in for big trouble. Everything was coming together for Jacob, he made amends with Laban, Esau, and God, but all that was about to change. God instructed him to go to Bethel, but as soon as he crossed that line into Canaan, he chose to dwell in Succoth instead. Jacob's only daughter started hanging out with the people and, it was there that she met a man named Shechem and they became intimate. When Jacob found out about it he should have done something, but he chose to let it go and his sons took matters in their own hands.

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come. And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister: And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us: But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised; And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying, These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters. Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised. Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.” - Genesis 34:5,13-15,20-23.

Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours?” Jacob did not handle this properly and it caused a mess of trouble, including his sons killing these men. However, they had their own agenda for “becoming one of them”. The world can care less about God or His people, in fact, they know they get blessed because God blesses His people wherever they go. No matter how strong we think we are to the forces of this world, we are powerless without God in it. While we are to be kind and compassionate to all, we cannot join forces with them. “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” - 2 Corinthians 6:14-18.

Many times God will allow us to take that wrong path in life, He will even allow us to stay in it a while, He waits until we have gone so far before He says, “Okay, listen to me now!” Now, after all that mess, Jacob was fearing for his life once again, it was then that God spoke to him and told him to go where He told him to go in the first place.

And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother. Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went. And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem. And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob. So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him.” - Genesis 35:1-6.

Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean,” God will not help us or direct our paths until all the idols are put away, we are clean, and change our garments. The second we get saved we are clean of our sins and able to stand before God, but if we want to be blessed beyond our salvation, we must put away those idols and change our clothes. “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.” - Revelation 16:15.

Even when we do get our of God's will from time to time, He is not done with us, thanks to His mercies, grace, and the promises He makes. You see, God always has a purpose for us, and even when we mess up He still uses us for it, it just takes Him longer for Him to do it. God was not done with Jacob, in fact, He blessed him, reminding him of who He is. “And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel. And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins; And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land. And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him. And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.” - Genesis 35:10-15.

and he called his name Israel.” Israel, the prince that prevails with God. God loves His people too much to allow them to be just ordinary people of the world, and if we just take time to see things the way God sees them we will find His commands are not so grievous. The life of a Christian is not always easy, and in fact, it's probably one of the hardest things we will ever endure, but keep in mind, our lives are not over once we leave this earth, even before then we will prevail with God. “For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” - 2 Corinthians 4:15-18.

Today's Prayer: God, As much as we would like to believe that the world has no power over us, it can if we walk in it without You. Lord, since we must dwell here, You must have a way for us to live here and not be conformed to it, lead us and guide us, give us Your power to remain separated from the world and not align ourselves with it. Keep us grounded in Your Word, let us not look to the right or left, but straight toward You so we can overcome the world and prevail. If we fall, love us, and guide us back to You. I love You and ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
