Chapters: 1 Samuel 23-25
Message: 1 Samuel: God Gets The Vengeance

Hello My Friend,

As Christians we will face all kinds of trials simply because of our faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Amazingly, there are even religions who claim to be Christians, yet have now idea who Christ is. The truth is, people who follow false religion really have no idea that they are being deceived, they are just doing what they are taught. How sad is it to go through life and think that you are doing what is right only to find out they got it all wrong. We can choose to follow the truth or a lie, but if we say we are Christians we need to follow the truth, and the only way to know the truth is to know the Saviour. “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” - I John 5:11,12.

Every where David went, Saul followed, there was always someone willing to sell him out for their own personal gain, even though they knew it was wrong. Saul even stooped so low as to start killing priests and their families for letting David go. This time, David was ready to fight for his life, but this time, the first thing he did before he ever made a move was ask God what he should do.

“Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake. Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O LORD God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy servant. And the LORD said, He will come down. Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up. Then David and his men, which were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he forbare to go forth. And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.” - 1 Samuel 23:10-14.

“but God delivered him not into his hand.” David knew that God was with him and would deliver him from Saul, but he also knew that if he wanted God's help he had to ask Him for it. I came to the conclusion that I need this reminder in front of me every day as it forces me to ask God whenever I am in a position to question what I need to be doing. God will not do anything to deliver us from our troubles unless we seek His guidance first. By seeking His guidance we are letting Him know that we are trusting in Him to make the right decision for us. We cannot go wrong when we allow Him to make the decisions for us. “Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.” - Psalm 25:8-10.

Grace, it is the unmerited favor of God, we cannot earn grace, it is given freely to us, but we often forfeit grace by focusing on the problems we face rather than the God who can give us the strength to deal with them. Before we make a decision, we first need to make sure it is from God, the devil is pretty good at making it look like something is coming from Him. Saul was about to learn what grace is all about when David had the opportunity to kill him.

“The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand. And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept. And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil. And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not. For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day. And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand. Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house. And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.” - 1 Samuel 24:15-22.

“for thou hast rewarded me good,” It is only by the grace of David, and the conviction of God that Saul was not killed. David's soldiers were convinced that God delivered Saul into David's hands, and David would have been rightly justified in killing him, but just by ripping his clothes he realized something, God had appointed Saul as king. And until He removed him from the throne, David had no right to take this mans life. No matter what people have done to us we have no right to take the law into our own hands, God will never allow us to take a life in order to receive something for He promised us. “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” - Romans 12:19-21.

By now all of Israel as well as the surrounding areas knew who David was, whenever he came into their town they wondered if he were there to destroy it or help them. David knew a man named Nabal, Nabal was a sheep wrangler, at one time he was having problems with the Philistines and asked David to help drive them away, as a result he became very rich and successful. When David heard that Nabal was out shearing sheep in the wilderness he tried to get his help to feed the hungry men that were with him. He refused to even acknowledge David and that brought a fury on him and he was about to destroy the city until Nabal's wife brought food and gifts and pleaded with David. Ten days later Nabal died.

“And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, that he died. And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.” - 1 Samuel 25:36-39.

“and hath kept his servant from evil:” There are a lot of Nabal's in life, they only want you around when they want something, yet expect people to constantly help them prosper. Sometimes Christians can become crutches to people like Nabal, and while it is the Christians duty to help and lift up those in need, there comes a time when we must realize we are hindering our blessings by continuing to help them. There are also people who help us from becoming a fool by retaliating due to anger or impulse. “Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.” - Proverbs 26:4,5,11,12.

Jesus Christ Revealed: Today Jesus is revealed through David's refusal to take the kingdom by force or before the appointed time set by God (24:10-13). Jesus refused to allow Israel to make Him king by force, “When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.” - John 6:15.

Today's Prayer: God, I know how easy it is to go after those who have done me wrong, I also know how awful I felt when I got even with them, it really did nothing for me or them. You love Your children and do not want anything bad to happen to them, but as we get closer to Your Son returning we are being persecuted and attacked more than ever. Give us Your power to control our anger, tempers, and egos, let us not seek vengeance upon ourselves, but look to You to take care of things for us. Give us Your strength to love as You love, and let us not get caught up in those who are eager to sell us out for their own wicked advances. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina

1 Samuel: No Better Friend

Chapters: 1 Samuel 20-22
Message: 1 Samuel: No Better Friend

Hello My Friend,

We all face difficulties in life, some seem to be more significant than others, and as Christians, we are often found with a dilemma, ask God what to do or make our own decision. Whenever we resort to our own reasoning, no matter what difficulties we face, we bring about more difficulties, but if we trust God and look to Him to make the right decisions for us He will send us on the right path. However, when we come to Him He will even make use of our mistakes. Remember, God will not push Himself on us, even when we are saved, He waits until we come to Him before He makes a move before He gets involved. “Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” -Romans 8:34,35,37.

One thing I never had growing up and still lack is a close friend, one that would be there for me, even in my darkest hour, one that would fight for me, even if it put them in danger. The second that Saul's son, Jonathan met David he felt a connection with him, they were in a sense soul brothers. When David realized that Saul wanted to kill him he had no idea why, but Jonathan insisted it was all a mistake and that if he went to his father it would be all cleared up. Jonathan soon found out that it was not a lie, and his father would stop at nothing to kill him.

“Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness? For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done? And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David. So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.” - 1 Samuel 20:30-34.

“thou shalt not be established,” Saul tried to use temptation and intimidation to get Jonathan to turn his back on David, stating that he would not be a king if David became king. The biggest ploy a person uses to get people to do what they want is temptation, and when that does not work, intimidation. At the end of our life there is only one person we must stand in front of and that is Jesus Christ. We will be accountable for everything we do in this life, while the saved do not face an eternity in hell, they do face seeing missed opportunities they could have had in His kingdom. “A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” - Matthew 12:35-37.

David finds no relief in Saul, all efforts to seek help from Jonathan, Michal, and Samuel are exhausted, his only hope for survival is to leave. He finds himself in Nob, where the tabernacle resided at that time, searching for aid from the priest, someone spots him there, one of Saul's men, Doeg.

“Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul. And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste. And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me. And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.” - 1 Samuel 21:7-10.

“detained before the LORD;” Held back of the priest for some religious purpose such as the fulfillment of a vow, or purification, a Sabbath, or on account of suspected leprosy. We do not know why Doeg was at the temple, but given what he does after he sees David it is likely that it had nothing to do with getting right with God. We must be careful who we get around, there is always someone out there trying to work there way up the ladder and will do anything to get what they want as well. While we never really know who will turn on us, we do have someone who will never turn on us and will fight for us in a moments notice, one who is always there, and even gave His life for us, that friend is Jesus Christ. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.” - John 15:13-16.

It is often jealousy and envy that turns a friend into an enemy. Jealousy is like a disease, it slowly spreads until it consumes and controls the person that it captures and stops at nothing to destroy what gets in its way. Saul became increasingly violent with an uncontrolled temper, he considered any opposition as treason. He even went as far as having the priest who helped David and all his family killed.

“And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord. And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house? Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more. And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house. And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD. And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.” - 1 Samuel 22:12-18.

“and fall upon the priests.” There is always someone willing to in a sense, sell their soul by going against what is right, our country is falling apart because of this very reason. Let me tell you, nothing is worth selling your soul for fame and or wealth, it will always end tragically. “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.” - Matthew 16:26-28.

Jesus Christ Revealed: Today Jesus is revealed through David, who was the safeguard for Abiathar the priest who escaped Saul (22:23). Jesus is our safeguard, not only from hell and the lake of fire, but from the world.

Today's Prayer: God, There is no better friend to have than Your Son, He truly does stick closer than a brother. Lord, let me be the friend You need me to be to bring others to You, give me Your power to stick close to Jesus, to learn from and follow Him at all times. Let me be a faithful friend who boldly proclaims Jesus as my Savior and seeks to reach others with the Gospel so they too know Him. In Jesus' name. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina

1 Samuel: Standing Up To Intimidation

KJB Daily Devotion – Following Jesus Through Every Chapter
Date
: Saturday, March 26, 2016
Chapters: 1 Samuel 17-19
Message: 1 Samuel: Standing Up To Intimidation

Hello My Friend,

As strong as our faith in God or even our ability to stand up to those who intimidate us, our biggest defeat is fear. Fear can stop the strongest person in their tracks, it is fear that keeps us from doing many things we should be doing. And it is fear that keeps us from living the God given dream that He has for us. We do not need to live in fear, we have a Saviour that gives us the strength to not only stand up to intimidation, but stop fear in it's tracks. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” - Philippians 4:13.

After Samuel anointed David to be the next king to rule Israel things changed dramatically, first, David became Saul's armourbearer. Can you imagine working for the very man that you are going to replace? Once God took His Spirit away from Saul, the devil decides to move in, and he was going to make sure that Saul despised David. It all starts when David comes to Saul to join the army. Now, the Philistines were in constant battle with Israel, this time they had a leader, Goliath, and talk about intimidation, this over nine foot tall giant was very good at it, he challenges Israel to bring one man to defeat him, and if they did Israel would be set free from their control. David, a mere shepherd coming to check on his brothers took the challenge and Saul allows him to.

“Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee. And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.” - 1 Samuel 17:36-40.

“he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” David did not fear Goliath because he knew that God was with him and would give him the strength to do exactly what Goliath said he would do to him. God gives you strength that you cannot believe given the right timing and faith. I have never had kids, but I have very protective motherly instincts when a child is in danger, God is the same way with us, His protective instincts kick in when we trust Him in our own strength and abilities. “Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight: My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.” - Psalms 144:1,2.

After David defeated Goliath the rest of the Philistines fled, and a great slaughter took place, Israel became a great army. The people rejoiced and something happened that would change his attitude toward David, as he was walking through town he hears the women praising David with a song.

“And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? And Saul eyed David from that day and forward. And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand. And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice. And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul. Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people. And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.” - 1 Samuel 18:8-14.

“And Saul was afraid of David,” Saul knew that God was with David and that scared him to death. God does not put fear in us, the devil does that, he can put so much fear in us that instead of being protective we become possessive, and will do anything to have that control again. We can overcome fear, but we must look to God, He is our strength, and He will show us how to handle intimidation to correct way. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.” - Proverbs 3:5-8.

Saul was so envious and jealous of David's success and relationship with God that the only solution he had to overcome it was to kill him. He sends him to battle the Philistines, got him to marry his own daughter, and even tried to get his son Jonathan, who was a great friend to David to kill him.

“And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan Saul's son delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself: And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin; but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night. Saul also sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Michal David's wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to morrow thou shalt be slain. So Michal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled, and escaped. So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.” - 1 Samuel 19:1,2,10-12,18.

“So David fled, and escaped,” It will not be easy for David to escape Saul, in fact, he will face many attempts on his life, but God will see him through. Of course, we are going to get discouraged and face some difficulties by walking with God, but in the end we have nothing to fear, but fear itself. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.” - 2 Timothy 1:7,12,13.

Jesus Christ Revealed: Today Jesus is revealed through Jonathan, who stripped himself of his royal robes and made the soul covenant with David, (18:3-4). Knowing the will of God, Jesus stripped Himself of His royal robe to be a servant for us. “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.” - Hebrews 2:9.

Today's Prayer: God, It seems like Christians are being persecuted more than ever and it is intimidating to live our lives in Your will without offending others. Lord, give us Your power to keep living by faith and not in fear of the enemy. Give us Your strength to stand up to those who intimidate us, and not be afraid to confront them. And give us the wisdom, guidance, and love that only You can give us to handle the situations we are faced with. In Jesus' name. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
