Chapters: Deuteronomy 7-9
Message: Deuteronomy: Follow My Commands And Live
Hello My Friend,
Live, to be exempt from death, temporal or spiritual, to have life prolonged, to act habitually in conformity to. By now, all saved born again Christians ought to known that to know Christ personally as their Saviour means they are saved by grace through their faith in Christ alone. If you have received Christ and believe that your salvation can be taken away, then you are not following the commands of God. In order to have the best life we can live here on earth, we need to understand that while our works do not save nor keep us saved, our works do keep us in line with God, and allow us to live peaceably and productively in this world. “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” - Romans 8:13-15.
Think about all the things you have been through over the years, those before Christ came into your life and after, what happened before Christ? As I recall, my problems only got bigger. In fact, it was in the midst of my biggest problem ever that I realized I needed Christ. Has it always been easy following Christ? No. But now the problems come with the hope of an expected end. You know, God did not just choose us because we are the best bunch of people, He chose us because He made a covenant with us, to never leave nor forsake us when we put our faith and trust in His Son. Now, as the Israelites prepare for their entrance into the promised land, Moses reminds them that they are holy and chosen by God Himself.
“For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth. The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people: But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations; And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.” - Deuteronomy 7:6-10.
“above all people that are upon the face of the earth.” Christians are by far perfect, they are in fact, the fewest in number, but God lifts them up higher than all the rest. Why? We are not redeemed by any works of our own, but by the works of Christ, who died on the cross for us. Because we believe in His Son, and receive Him as our Saviour He is faithful to us, He is full of mercy and grace toward us, and He will never break His promise to give all who receive Him eternal life. Any good that we do after we are saved comes from our love for God as we learn His ways and follow them. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” - Ephesians 2:8-10.
Since God's people are few in number, they who put their faith and trust in Him, are mighty. Everything that God allows us to go through is because we are a holy people, special people, and chosen by Him because of our faith in His Son. Moses reminds the Israelites to observe God's commands, and as long as they did they will be blessed, but he also warns them what would happen if they forget God.
“For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills; Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.” - Deuteronomy 8:7,11,14,18-20.
“for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth,” The talents, the skills, the disposition you have are all given by God to give you power to do the work necessary to get paid. God wants to see us work, in fact, He says if we do not work we ought not to eat. Now, when we are willing to do everything in our own power, God will continue in His power so that nothing is impossible. “Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works,
when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how
faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?”
- James 2:18-22.
Again, we are not perfect, God does not expect us to be, what He does expect us to be is faithful, to follow His commands and live. As we walk through the maze of life with Christ we become humbled, dependent upon Him, learn to trust Him more, and He return blesses us through our faith and obedience. As Moses continues, he assures them that God will be there for them, that He will go before them, fight for them, and help them drive out of the people and idols. He also stresses the importance of realizing they are not receiving anything for the good that they have done.
“Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee. Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee. Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people. Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD.” - Deuteronomy 9:3-7.
“Remember, and forget not,” Not by works of righteousness which have we done, but by faith are we saved. Not by any good works of our own are we saved, but by our faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work. Because we have sinned we all deserve death and hell, now, no one wants the admit that even their little white lie deserves death and hell, but the truth is, it is a sin and any wrongdoing, whether it was meant for good or evil receives the same judgment. That is where Jesus comes in, God promises to save us, by our faith in the finished work of His Son. Why? Because we are stiffnecked, stubbornly adhering to our own purpose, difficult to manage, and unyielding to God, not all the time, but quite a bit. It is only by grace, unmerited love that God keeps His promise. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one.” - John 10:27-30.
Today's Prayer: God, All we have to do to realize how blessed we are is to look back on the life we lived without You in it. It was cold, dark, and depressing, trying to fit in where we didn't belong, trying to blend in with a world that did not accept us. Oh, we had some fun, but in the end we were the ones who suffered. It is only by Your grace, Your love, and Your favor, that You picked me up out of the rut I was in and gave me a new life. The world still tries to drag me in, but I know You are always with me, right there in front of me, making sure that I am safe and secure. I know I will mess up, but thanks to Your amazing grace all I have to do is come to You and You will make it right. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
