Chapters: Deuteronomy 1-3
Message: Deuteronomy: When God Says No
Hello My Friend,
The Book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament/Bible and contains thirty-four chapters. The author of the book is Moses and it was written to the Israelites, the timeline is approximately 1451BC. The purpose of the book was to reinstate the law to the new generation of Israel that was given forty years ago on Mt. Sinai to their parents. What we are to learn from the book is that obedience to God always brings blessings, but disobedience judgment. “For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward: He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.” - Deuteronomy 10:17,18.
You know, we all desire things in life, and God knows every one of them. Somethings we get right away, some things take a little or a long time, and yet there are some that we never will get. How do we know whether it is a no, slow, or go request? Just think how God would handle things and for from there. Forty years have passed since the Israelites had the opportunity to cross over the Jordan into the promised land, just like God said, they spent one year for each day that the twelve spies got a taste of the promised land in the wilderness. Those who did not believe, trust or tempted God along the way were gone, Moses reminds them of why they spent forty years in there in the first place, but first says, it is time to move forward into the promised land.
“And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them; The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount: Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates. Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.” - Deuteronomy 1:3,6-8.
“go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers,” Sometimes when we are waiting on God to fulfill His promises it can literally feel like a lifetime, and in some cases it may be, many people are saved in the last hours of their lives. While waiting on God, do not get depressed because something is taking longer than expected, we must move forward and just maybe as we keep walking by faith we will see that special request answered. Keep in mind that even if we never see it in our lifetime, we do have something much better awaiting us. “These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.” - Hebrews 11:13-16.
The main reason why they had to wait forty years was because of their unbelief. Saved or not, if someone we know does not believe in something chances are slim that we will see some things in our lifetime until that person is out of our lives. Now Moses gives them a review of the commands God had given when their fathers were alive, and some new ones to be used specifically in the land they were about to possess. He reminds them that even though they spent years in the wilderness, God always took care of them.
“Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward. And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore: Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession. Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink. For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.” - Deuteronomy 2:3-7.
“thou hast lacked nothing.” We may not have the best things in the world, but we always have the things we need. God knew what they needed, food, shelter, water, cattle for the offerings, He always provided them with what they needed, everything else they got was came from their hard work. “Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:5-7,19.
While God does promise to give eternal life and His Kingdom to all who believe in His Son, that does not mean we will not have to battle any giants along the way nor that we will get everything we want in doing so. Moses warns the Israelites about the giants they would face entering the promised land, how he begged God to let him enter, but could not. He also assures them that even though he would not be there, God would as long as they listened to His warnings, followed His instructions, and let Joshua be the leader he was called to be.
“Ye shall not fear them: for the LORD your God he shall fight for you. And I besought the LORD at that time, saying, O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might? I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that goodly mountain, and Lebanon. But the LORD was wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter. Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan. But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.” - Deuteronomy 3:22-28.
“speak no more unto me of this matter.” When God says no, He means it and there is no convincing Him otherwise. While Jesus said that if we ask anything in His name believing we will receive it, it only works if it is in God's will to allow us to receive it. God factors many things in when we make requests, including disbelief, our faith, and obedience, and although He tells us no to some things, we must not give up on God, we move forward with the promise of eternal life, knowing that we do have much better things waiting for us beyond the Jordan. “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:” - Hebrews 12:28.
Today's Prayer: God, It never ceases to amaze me that with all I have done in my life You love me and provide for me. I know I am not going to heaven for any good that I have done, but through my faith and trust in Your Son, who cleaned my soul when I applied His blood upon me. When Jesus returns, I want to be able to hear Him say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” Lord, lead me and guide me, keep me serving You, obeying You, loving You, and trusting You no matter what comes in my life, and keep me looking for that blessed hope of Your glorious Kingdom. Let me not forget all that You blessed me with because of something I want that You say no to. Reveal to me anything I am asking that You do not want to hear, and replace it with things that You do. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
