Message: Deuteronomy: Put Away The Evil

Hello My Friend,

Evil, Having bad qualities of a moral kind; wicked; corrupt; perverse; wrong. As humans we all have a little bit of evil in us from time to time, but some people seem to be born evil. When you stop to think about it, no one is born evil, influences, pride, desires, emotions, these all play a big part in who we become. So, who is your father? If you believe in Jesus, God is your Father. “Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” - John 8:42-44.

God has always been adamant about putting away the evil from our lives, while we are no longer kept under the law, we still need to put away the evil just for the sake of saving ourselves some heartache. As Moses continues to give the statutes and judgments to the Israelites regarding someone being killed, he explains what is necessary to rid the city of any evil that would come as a result of a dead body found with no explanation.

And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer's neck there in the valley: And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried: And all the elders of that city, that are next unto the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley: And they shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it. Be merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Israel's charge. And the blood shall be forgiven them. So shalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the LORD.” - Deuteronomy 21:4-9.

So shalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you,” Innocent blood, how many lives are lost by the hands of someone doing something evil or immoral? While the heifer sacrifice is referring to someone who died of natural causes, we must not forget that millions of lives are lost for no good reason, those who shed innocent blood will be held accountable for their actions. While the law of grace redeems every soul who comes to Christ, evil is still evil, it all comes with a price, guilt alone is a great price. No matter what we have done, we must confess and repent of our sins to put away the guilt and do what is right in the sight of God. “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates. Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates. For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.” - 2 Corinthians 13:5-8.

Reprobate, A person abandoned to sin; one lost to virtue and religion. Most parents raise their kids to be good and accountable for their actions, some are too strict to the point of rebellion, yet others are too lax to the point of bad influences. Every child needs guidance and nurturing, if they are not getting it from the parents they are going to go somewhere else, and we all become who we get around. We are blessed to not be under the law any longer because if we rebelled against our parents today under the law we would be dead. Moses gives the law regarding a rebellious child to put away the evil from among the congregation.

If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear. And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.” - Deuteronomy 2:18-23.

And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death,” Every sin is worthy of death. Jesus took the sin of every man (and woman) to the tree with Him when He gave His life for us, He was hung for our sins. While hanging on the tree God turned His back to His Son, not being able to look at Him for all the sin that was attached to Him. Jesus died so that we would not die for our sin, He made a way for us to redeemed so that we are no longer bound to a law that we cannot keep, but bound to His precious blood for eternity. “But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:” - Galatians 3:11-13.

Some things are just common sense to know they are evil, other things, not so much. How do we know what is good or evil? Trust your gut as well as your senses, if something seems off, it probably is wrong. God will guide us to right and wrong through the Holy Spirit, His word is also a good guide. God thought of everything when it came to teaching the Israelites how to live godly on the promised land, some of the things seemed like common sense, while others were like, what? Regardless, there was a reason behind all of them.

When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence. Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest the fruit of thy seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled. Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together. Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together. Thou shalt make thee fringes upon the four quarters of thy vesture, wherewith thou coverest thyself. If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.”- Deuteronomy 22:8-12,28,29.

and the fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled.” I have a papaya tree in my yard, when they first began to grow I had no idea what they were, but as the colors came through I realized but, by that time many were rotten and began falling to the ground. If you have ever seen rotten fruit than you know how disgusting it is, and the only thing it is good is well, nothing. Did you know that we are like fruit? Many are good, but among us are some rotten ones, these would be those claiming to know Christ, but defiling people, with their crazy teaching, including God's own. What happens to rotten fruit? It gets thrown away, likewise, anyone who is not truly a saved. “Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” - Matthew 7:17-20.

Jesus Christ Revealed: Jesus is revealed through the hanged body on the tree that was taken down before the end of the night. In the evening Jesus was taken down from the cross, signifying the Law had been satisfied.

Today's Prayer: God, In this corrupt and wicked world evil is everywhere we turn, sometimes in our very own homes. There are people and things that are just bad for us if we do not get them out of our lives. Lord, lead us and guide us, show us the way we are to take, help us know how to tell the rotten fruit from the good, give us good judgment, and discernment when we need it and the strength to put away anyone or thing that is evil in our lives. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
